Microsoft Silverlight coming to Symbian platform

Today we just found the news that Microsoft Silverlight has now come for the Symbian platform, although still in Beta version at least this is a major breakthrough for the world of handheld devices today.

Silverlight is the Microsoft implementation of the application of cross-browser, Cross-platform .NET Framework to build a media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Web on desktop computers'. But with this version, allows the application running on the Symbian environment.

Because this is still an early stage of the Silverlight Beta application for Symbian, so there are still some shortcomings and limitations when compared with the PC version of Silverlight. Deficiency is still present in the input method, media codecs and controls.

Indonesia's Indosat to offer BlackBerry Storm2 this April

Although the market is quite small, it doesn't hinder Indonesia's Indosat from launching the next series of BlackBerry touchscreen, Storm2. Also known as Storm 9520 (9550 for CDMA-GSM version), the handset will be available this April.

In Indonesia, the previous sales of Storm 9500 is not as good as the QWERTY one, as it's only offered by Indosat and Telkomsel. Teguh Prasetya, Indosat's official, said that the idea of providing Storm2 is merely for giving option, especially for their niche segment, not just about sales.

Storm2 is the latest touchscreen handset by RIM. It brings some updates, including the ability to play 3D games, like in iPhone, thanks to new graphic card implanted. Beside Storm2, it is said that Indosat will also bring number of new BlackBerry series into their GSM / CDMA portfolios.

Mobile Number Portability is delayed (again) in India

Mobile Number Portability (usually abbreviated as MNP) in simple explanation is the ability of switching operator without the need of changing number. There are pros and cons regarding this condition, but most operators are in fear when MNP is being implemented in one country since they can't keep customers being loyal just because of the number. When the operator is disappointing, customers can move freely from one operator to another bringing his/her precious number.

In India, however, the MNP implementation is again being delayed. After previously being delayed from Dec 31, 2009, seems like it will not meet the requirement on March 31 -- new deadline, reported by Fone Arena. Indian government has not revealed the cause, but we may blame it to the willingness of local operators to support this idea.

In Asia Pacific region, several countries have implemented MNP, pushing operators to provide their best services. Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, South Korea, Taiwan, and Malaysia are among them. If you'd like to read study about MNP, this report from Frost & Sullivan may bring good insight.

Thailand adds more operator to sell iPhone, DTAC is in the house

Another iPhone exclusivity been banished from neighboring country. Thailand previously enjoyed such thing when True Move was the sole distributor of iPhone last year. Around 100,000 iPhone units are reported being sold by True Move. Now rival DTAC offers similar thing for iPhone 3G and 3GS.

Being officially launched last weekend, DTAC provides a (should be) attractive price packages. Unfortunately I can't read any Thai font, all I can see there are two price packages for iPhone 3GS, THB22,900 (US$700) and THB24,500 (US$750). If you want to obtain comprehensive information (and know how to read Thai), don't hesitate to look up at http://www.dtac.co.th/iphone/index.php.

As far as I know, both True Move and DTAC are not the largest operator in the Thailand. It's AIS which still holds the crown. Until now, Apple and AIS are still in talk about iPhone, but this move by DTAC may stimulate AIS to bring the conversation into action.

In Thailand, the condition is more and less like in Indonesia. BlackBerry is a boom there and iPhone seller still figure out to find niche.

Nokia Ovi Player updated to v2.1

The Nokia Ovi Player or formerly known as the Nokia Media Player, this day has been updated to version 2.1. This new update provides stability and performance over the existing weaknesses in the previous version.

Here are the features available on the new version:

  • We have re-worked music downloads functionality to make it more reliable. You can now pause and restart downloads from the Nokia and Ovi Music stores. Ovi Player will automatically retry any failed downloads and will also preserve uncompleted downloads on application restart.
  • With the latest Nokia Ovi Player you can now automatically import your music library from iTunes and all the manual playlists that you created in iTunes (however, iTunes DRM protected files and smart playlists will not be imported).
  • We have also provided a new 'Play' above the control column headers in detailed view. Simply click this button and containing all the tracks will be added to the Player Queue and played sequentially.
  • There are new tooltips for tracks in the Playlists and Player Queue. These tooltips are visible when Hovering over a track and will show you Artist, Album and Artwork for the track.
  • We've made it easier to select the Music Store for your region (note that you will need a credit card for that region to purchase any tracks) and change the proxy settings. Just hit F4 key and all this pops up in the Options dialogue window.
  • The new version is more robust and efficient memory when compared to the previous version.
  • Finally, we have also made it possible to hide the start-up screen, so you can carry on using other applications without being interfered by the Nokia Ovi Player.

We can download it at music.nokia.com/download or if you previously have had Ovi Player application installed, just go to "Check for Updates".

Android Market maybe blocked at South Korea

Android smartphones already available in South Korea since the mid-2009. And actual Android users in South Korea are also quite a lot, so that potential users to use the android applications and games that have the Android Market.

But the bad news for Android users in Korea, there is a rumors said that the local government will block Android Market in accordance with local government regulations. Because Android Market now includes around 4,400 types of games that have not been in the ratings by South Korea's Game Rating Board to decide whether games are suitable for play by children.

The Game Rating Board has sent a letter to Google to ask companies to collaborate to this problem. As reported, Google Korea is doing the review process for the letter.

Tri vs Indosat

Spotted this ad placement on Kompas.com the other day. Tri, the Indonesian arm of Hutchison Telecom's 3 had been running a campaign for its brand new BlackBerry service featuring popular singer Agnes Monica touting their rock-bottom pricing. Agnes says, "Anyone who can find a Blackberry service cheaper than mine can be my boyfriend."

Indosat cleverly retaliated by placing one of their own which features someone's pair of eyes looking up directly at  Agnes Monica and a wordplay on Agnes' name. The text says, "I'm not after dating, I want to get married." "Mau menikah" (or colloquially, mo nikah) is Indonesian for "want to get married."

Both ads are animated and unfortunately I haven't got a practical screen capture software, so you'll have to go to the website yourself (warning: ad overload). Props to the team at Indosat for coming up with this gem of an ad.
