Street Fighter IV for iPhone

Just a quick heads up for those who are into gaming, Capcom's Street Fighter IV for iPhone is now out on the App Store. We haven't got the game yet but I figured looking at this screenshot from the App Store would give you some idea as to how you would play the game. The timing is perfect as today is the first day of Game Developer Conference in San Francisco which began with a two day summit on iPhone gaming.

TUAW has had a chance to play the game and they say it's "about as faithful a Street Fighter game as you can get on the iPhone." However it can get pretty tricky pulling all those advanced combo moves without actual buttons and directional pad, so if you decide to buy it, you might wanna make sure you work your way to mastering the game. Naturally, it doesn't fall under the "cheap" category of apps or games but for what you're getting, it looks like quite a port.

The game costs $9.99 on the US and Indonesian App Stores and weighs in at 201MB.

LG launched Andro-1, local version of GW620

While LG GW620 has been around for a while, apparently even local Korea market hasn't tasted LG's first Android handset yet. Thus, KT officially offers a Korea version of GW620, named Andro-1 or KH5200, to local market for free with contract

Specs wise, Andro-1 is no different to GW620. OS 1.5, sliding full QWERTY keyboard, 5 megapixels camera, and 3 inch resistive touchscreen, with the possibility of OS 2.1 update in near future. I have played with this phone myself, and while its resistive screen isn't as responsive as capacitive one, the screen quality is quite superb.

Did I mention it bears built-in FM radio too? This is something you hardly found in America-made smartphones.

Indonesia's XL Axiata offers (cheaper) Android phones

Indonesias_XL_Axiata_offers_ch.zip (25 KB)

Here's another Android story in Indonesia. Whilst Indosat clearly wants to embrace mid-to-end level for their Android segment, XL Axiata most likely will "educate" mid-to-low level.

The first project of their Android phone is i-mobile IE6010 [link in Thai]. Will be offered for IDR 1,999,000 (around US$217), IE6010 is Tri-band GSM phone powered by Android OS 1.6 (Donut).

Claimed to be one of GMS phone -- thus having all Google Mobile Services, including Android Market -- this IE6010 boasts  EDGE connectivity, 3 inch screen display, 256 MB ROM, 128 MB RAM, and external microSD memory for up to 16GB. There's 3.2 megapixels camera too. With only 1200 mAh Li-on battery, I doubt the battery will last longer than 12 hours of usage.

Currently, it will be presented in Jabotadebatek area, but XL Axiata plans to hold a roadshow to promote this "cheap" Android phone.

LG brings successors to popular Cookie series

LG_brings_successors_to_popula.zip (386 KB)

About more than a year ago, LG Cookie was a quite big hit in Indonesia. Being mid-to-low touchscreen phone -- I dare not to say smartphone -- without any direct competitor (until Samsung unveiled theirs), LG gained much love from beginners in this segment.

This year, LG brings Cookie series successors [link in Korean], dubbed as Cookie Plus and Cookie Fresh. Those phones will be available this March to most areas, including Asia.

Not much update actually comes up from the siblings, only better connectivity (with 3G), better camera, and 3.5mm handset jack support, these new phones are merely refreshed eye candy to the series.

Cookie Plus has 3 megapixels camera, while Cookie Fresh is plugged with 2 megapixels. Hopefully they'll get loved as much since currently they'll compete with mid-to-low Android phones, boomed recently.

Microsoft showcases cross-platform game on Xbox, Windows and Windows Phone 7

When we talk about mobile gaming device, our brain will definitely think about Sony PSP, Nintendo DSi and of course the Apple iPhone/iPod touch. Seeing how mobile gaming industry has grown in the past couple of years, it seems that Microsoft couldn't help them self to join the party. Eric Rudder, Microsoft's Senior Vice President of Technical Strategy was recently showcased the potential to unify your favorite games across all of your Microsoft-themed devices. He demoed a single Indiana Jones game that can run on Windows, Xbox 360 and also the Windows Phone 7 series devices.

Eric also said that developing on those three platform is pretty simple, the developers first create the game in Visual Studio, and then they can share almost 90 percent of its code across the three other platforms. But where the other 10 percent goes? It'll go to the unique code for each other platform, for example: Keyboard and Mouse support on Windows, Gamepad support on Xbox 360 and Touch panel plus the Accelerometer support on the Windows Phone series. Some other cool feature is, you can share your save game across those three platform, say you first play the game on your Xbox, you save the game and then you can continue the game on the road using your Windows Phone device!

My first impressions of Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

So yesterday, I went to Mega Bazzar Computer to check out the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. I play with the phone for a couple of minutes, and my first impressions with the phone are,

  • it's pretty light for a big phone, almost as light as the Nexus One
  • it's slim, but not really sure if it's any slimmer than the Nexus One or the iPhone 3GS
  • the screen is HUGE! some people said that 4" is too big and I gotta agree with them. It's really big, I don't have any problem navigating from side to side, but sometimes I need to adjust my hand when I tried to navigate from the top to the bottom of the screen
  • The display is pretty good, but it doesn't wow's me like when I first tried the Milestone or the Nexus One, one of my colleagues said that it only has 65k of colors but I think it's because the X10 is still using the Android 1.6. Once the X10 got upgraded to Android 2.0, I'm pretty sure that it'll have the 262k of colors
  • The Timescape and Mediascape UI feels really good, the 1GHz snapdragon processor really does the work right here. Scrolling through the list of contacts feels really good, I can still feel some hiccups sometimes, but I think it's a software issue, something that SE could fix with a software update
  • SE X10 also has a 384 MB of RAM and about 1GB of internal memory. Now, while I really like the big space of internal memory, the RAM however, is questionable, I kinda expect SE will put a 512 MB like Google did with the Nexus One. But that's just me, I just hope the phone could still flies once its loaded with lots of apps.
That's all I can say from my very brief hands-on with the phone, I haven't got a chance to check out the browser or the camera or the image gallery (the dude next to me have been nudging me like "lemme try! lemme try!", jeez.. relax dude!).

To wrap it up, so far I'm really impressed with the phone, it's a good phone, the Timescape and Mediascape might suffers a hiccups once the phone got a lot of apps running in the background but it definitely a feature that I would love to have on my Nexus One. Not really sure about the battery life though, it's a 4" of a regular TFT screen and the battery is only 1500mAh (if I'm not mistaken), go figure how long can it last, my bet is 14 hours, that's the best that I think this phone could achieved.

10 free apps that any new Android users should have

Android Market is still new, only got 20,000++ apps on it, and got to admit, there were also lots of junk apps in there and that makes you confused of what apps that you should download to your brand new Android phone. Don't worry we are here to help you pick up 10 apps that you should have on your Android phone.

Without further ado, here are 10 free Android apps that you should have
  1. Astro:

It's a file manager, and not just any file manager, it's probably the best & most powerful file manager for Android. You could do some basic features like, copy, paste, rename, move and delete some files or folder on your SDCard. Astro also allows you to backup your installed apps onto your phone SDCard and then restore them when you need it. Astro could also open a .zip files straight from the apps, so you don't need to extract the .zip file to see what's inside.
Other similar apps: Linda File Manager.

  2. 3Banana:

3Banana is a note taking application for Android. You could take a notes in form of text, voice, take a photo notes and even scan a barcode then store the info as a note. The great thing about 3Banana is that you could sync all your notes with your Google account, this way all of your notes will be stored in the cloud, so you don't need to worry about loosing any of your notes. 3Banana also has a widget, so if you're in a hurry, just add the widget to your homescreen, tap the textfield and then start creating a note.
Other similar apps: AK Notepad, or Evernote (no offline reading).

  3. Astrid:

If you're a Task junkie and need everything scheduled. You might wanna try Astrid. With Astrid, you could add a tag for your to do list, set a reminder and even sync it with your Remember The Milk account.
Other similar apps: OI Shopping Lists, CloudList or Mobisle Note.

  4. Seesmic:

Personally I'd prefer Twicca as my best Twitter client for Android, but since Seesmic supports 'Reply All' feature, Seesmic is the clear winner here. If we talk about Twitter client for Android, there's a lot of other alternatives out there such as, Tweetcaster, Swift, TweetsRide and of course Twidroid. But I personally think Twicca & Seesmic has a better features & especially a better UI than the others.
Other similar apps: Twicca, Twidroid, TweetsRide, Swift, Tweetcaster, Touiteur, HootSuite and the list goes on..

  5. Newsrob:

It's simply the best RSS feed reader app for your Android phone, why? first, you can sync it with your Google Reader account, and second, it's free! Sure there's other alternatives like Greed or FeedR, but both of them are paid apps.

  6. 3GWatchdog:

With 3G Watchdog, you can monitors your mobile internet traffic usage. You can set the quota of your data usage, set a notification and also turn off the data (3G & GPRS) if the usage has or near its quota limit. You can also set a status icon on the notification drawer for a quick access to 3GWatchdog.

  7. APNDroid:

It's a complementary apps for 3G Watchdog. Say that you don't want your Android phone to use any data when it's not necessary (duh), the only way to turn off your data completely on your Android phone is by deleting the APN name. But the process to do that is a pain in the a**, you need to do the tap dance to do that, tap the settings, tap the wireless & networks, tap the mobile network, then tap the Access Point Name, then delete it. With APNDroid you don't need to do the tap dance, just tap the APN Droid icon then it will turn off your data (3G & GPRS) completely. Tap the icon once again to turn it on. You could also add the APNDroid widget to your homescreen for an easy access.

  8. Abduction:

So you want Doodle Jump game on your Android phone, but paid apps isn't available on your country, yet. Meet Abduction, it's a pretty similar game, your goal is to jump from one platform to another without falling by tilting your phone to the left or right. There's only a couple of level on the free version but I think it's a pretty good time waster.

  9. ACV or Droid Comic Viewer:

ACV or Droid Comic Viewer is an apps that allows you to read a comic, straight from your Android phone. It supports a couple of file extensions such as, .CBZ/ZIP, .CBR/RAR, .ACV, .JPEG, .PNG, .BMP and also image folders. ACV also allows you to read a comic from your SDCard, so all you need to do is download a comic from your browser then open the file using ACV. It's a bit slow navigating from one page to another (it's definitely faster if you're on N1, Milestone or Xperia X10) but I think it's a pretty decent comic app for Android.

  10. Foyage:

With Foyage, you could check out any nearby places from your phone. It includes places like ATM machine, Bank, Restaurants, Cinema, Hotels and even a Gas Station. You could also rate and give some review of that place.
Other similar apps: Places Directory or buUuk.
There you have it, those are my ten must have apps on your Android phone, some might ask why I didn't put any IM application? My answer is pretty simple, if I want to chat I'd rather use the built in Google Talk apps, it's the most reliable IM apps for Android. I'm not saying the other IM apps isn't reliable, it's just not good enough for me. But if you want to have an IM apps, you could always try e-buddy or Meebo, both supports multiple account and has a very intuitive UI.

Other apps that I didn't mention but you should definitely try are, Google Sky Map - you could check out the stars and planets from your Android phone, Barcode Scanner - Allows you to scan a barcode then search the item via your browser, Dolphin Browser - alternative browser for your android, it supports multi touch and gestures.

Nokia N900 most likely be available in Southeast Asia region this March

While Nokia N900 has already available since November 2009 in selected European countries, countries in Asia haven't enjoy such luxury. It was stated previously that N900 will not come to Asia or as being evaluated, and seems like the question has been already answered now.

Take a look at this landing page in Nokia Malaysia site and information retrieved from @gadtorade. Those two confirm about availability of Nokia N900 in Southeast Asia region, in particular, in near future. The latter even states that it will be available in Indonesia in mid of March.

While we haven't had further information about pricing list, it is said that N900 is the best Nokia smartphone so far. Sporting Maemo 5 operating system, Nokia brings native Linux based system into its handset, just like Google develops its Android. Some examples reveal that Nokia N900 loads Google Wave and Google Earth perfectly, enough reasons to back earlier statement.
