We previously caught rumor that there will be update for Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 to support multitouch when X10 finally got OS 2.1 update in September. Apparently this news is basically just rumor since Sony Ericsson North America, via its twitter account, encounter this issue by stating that Xperia X10 will NOT support multitouch. Multitouch is still not a core feature in X10. This should be a disappointing news for X10 fans.
Multitouch feature is sort of issue in United States since Apple has been granted several patents regarding these. Thankfully it won't be a dispute in the rest of the world.
According to mobiles.co.uk, on the second half of 2010, probably around September, the X10 will have a very 'big' update and guess what... it will also include the multi-touch capability. This is really surprising, especially the multi-touch capability. Previously, we already know that the X10 will never support the multi-touch due to hardware related issue, but if the news is true, then the X10 is only having a software related issue. My bet is, on September, the X10 will eventually receive the Android 2.1 (which will allows the multi-touch) update its been longing for, but the real question is, will it receive the Android 2.1 OR will it receive the newer Android update? assuming that Google has released their newest Android update, Froyo. We'll just have to wait and see..
Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 now available in many countries, including in Asia region. The flagship launch was held in Japan, exclusively available for NTT docomo users and created quite big buzz there. There are 50,000 pre-orders listed and the photos shown in Sony Ericsson blogs revealed some long queues to get this first Android phone from Japan-Sweden venture.
Beside in Japan, X10 has hit the stores in Indonesia and Malaysia. The regular price in Indonesia is IDR6,999,000 (around US$776), while in Malaysia, according to @CHIPMY, the X10 price is RM2,799 (US$871). Along with X10, Sony Ericsson also unveiled Vivaz and Elm for public. Xperia X10 sports wide 4 inch TFT display, along with 1GHz Snapdragon processor and 8 megapixels camera. It brings customized Android OS 1.6 (Donut) with own TimeScape and MediaScape apps. Initially announced on November last year, this X10 series hopefully bring Sony Ericsson back into the game. If you have comment, impression, or problem with your X10, don't hesitate to drop one at Sony Ericsson Product Blog.
Because of issues related to hardware, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will never support the multi-touch features. AndroidAndMe site also tells this story and this seems true.
Sony Ericsson X10 not able to adopt multitouch technology, is not only a constraint on the hardware, but also the software it uses does not support those features. Xperia X10 running Android operating system 1.6, which does not have an API to support these functions. Sony Ericsson has said previously that the device will receive updates to the Android 2.1. Because Android 2.1 has the necessary APIs to support multi-touch, but with limitations of hardware it has, X10 still can not support this feature even if done a little hack to it. Since Sony Ericsson Indonesia has delayed the launching of Xperia X10 for public to April 5, seems like our Japanese comrades will taste this phone first. NTT Docomo confirms to offer this phone starting on April 1.
This is the second Android phone to be offered in Japan. The first one is HTC Magic, dubbed as HT-03A, last July. While foreign phones like iPhone or Windows Mobile still struggle to find its niche in Japan savvy market, Docomo tries to prepare more for its Android platform by creating several own apps.
Bear in mind that Docomo is member of Open Handset Alliance, business alliance led by Google to bring open standard to mobile devices. X10 is the first Android phone by Sony Ericsson, brings 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 4 inch screen wide, and 8 megapixels camera.
The latest information obtained from Indonesia's Indosat officials mentions that the upcoming Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will NOT be available during Indosat Android Expo on March 3-7, like the rests. The phone itself will be ready approximately around April 5-18.
Thus, if you have already pre-ordered X10, just go to Indosat Android Expo and pick a coupon for claiming the product on selected Sony Ericsson Shop. Without the coupon, you will find difficulty on claiming since you can't use your pre-order form to pick it directly. For further details, please contact Sony Ericsson Call Center - (021) 270 1388. So, it's not DOCOMO or Rogers that becomes the first operator in the world to launch the first Sony Ericsson's Android handset, Xperia X10. It's Indonesia's operator Indosat that will be the first to offer X10 on March 3-7 during Indosat Android Expo.
X10 will join other Android handsets (six in total) to be offered as counterpart for Telkomsel's iPhone 3GS launching last week. Telkomsel and Indosat are the current country's largest and second largest operators respectively.
The pre-order price is IDR 6.5 million (around US$695), with regular price (after the pre-order period, which starting on Feb 22 to 28) at IDR 7 million (almost US$750). Bonuses include leather case, screen protector, and phone stand.
X10 will also be offered with Google Mobile Service. It's said that Indosat will unveil its own Indosat Application Store to accompany Android Market, yet it's not clear whether only load Android apps or also available for other platforms (like BlackBerry).
X10 is a beast sporting 1GHz Snapdragon processor, large 4 inch touchscreen display (800*480 pixels resolution), and 8.1 megapixels camera. The initial product will be powered by OS 1.6 Donut, but it's expected to have OS 2.x update by March or April.
Official Sony Ericsson's account in YouTube for Mobile World Congress (MWC) has released a hands on video about X10 Mini Pro. Although not being taken in high quality video, we can see that the navigation is acceptably fast, the QWERTY keyboard is pretty decent, and the customized UI is quite beautiful. If you don't want to categorized yourself into big screen fans, maybe this mini smartphone will be a perfect companion.
There's also non-keyboard version of X10 mini series as being announced last nite, Barcelona time at MWC10. The difference between X10 and X10 Mini series can be found here. All X10 and X10 Mini series are powered by Android OS 1.6.
Just a couple of hours before the MWC 2010 started, Sony Ericsson announced their three new handsets. First up, the Symbian S60 5th edition handset, the Sony Ericsson Vivaz Pro. Sony Ericsson Vivaz Pro:
The other two new handsets are the little brother of the yet-to-be-launched Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, the X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro. The X10 Mini and Mini Pro will be equipped with a 600 MHz Qualcomm processor, 5MP camera with auto-focus and geo-tagging, 2.55" QVGA touchscreen display, aGPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Android 1.6 with Sony Ericsson Timescape & Mediascape.
