Seesmic for Android new update, brings a new Interface, auto complete and couple of other stuffs

Seesmic-logo

Seesmic for Android just got updated and it brings tons of improvements. Most notable improvement is the UI, gone the ugly & tiny title bar, replaced by the new big top bar that are getting common to see in Android apps nowadays.

The top bar, or Android developers usually called it the 'Action Bar', contains buttons at the far right that can be changed depends on the screen that you are currently in. For example, if you are on the main screen, you will see Refresh, New Tweets and Search button, but if you are viewing a tweet, then the buttons changed to Reply, Retweet and Share button.

In my opinion, the new UI is much more cleaner than the previous UI, but there is one thing that I missed though, apparently now you can't see the client that was used when a user is sending a tweet. Not a big deal though, but hey its nice to have a little bit of detail isn't it?

Other than the revamped UI, the update also brings you the auto-complete for usernames, a much better composer with upload of attachments at posting only, ability to change your Twitter avatar, available in 8 languages and along with Google Buzz, Seesmic now also supports Salesforce Chatter.

Twitter for Android gets a new update, adds a couple of Twitter for iPhone features

2010-11-04_05h14_42

So this just in, after Facebook updates their Android app, Twitter also updates their Android app. The update adds a couple of new features as well making the app looks more polished and faster.

So what new features are we talking about here? If you have used the iPhone version, you'll notice some of its new features is included in the new update. First is the pull down refresh, now you can pull down the timeline to get new tweets, it works great and very intuitive, oh and it also includes the sound effect that you usually heard in the iPhone version.

Second is if you slide one of the tweet to left or right, it will shows you various options like reply, Retweet, favorite, show profile and share tweet. If you tap the Retweet button, it will also ask you if you want to use native retweet or quote retweet. The tweet page details also got updated, its a lot more like the iPhone version now with buttons at the bottom of the page. The only thing that I missed from this update, is there is no 'Jump to Top' feature.

Some of you guys might not like the update by saying this is just make the Android version lost its uniqueness, but I disagree, I was expecting a couple of features from the iPhone version to be "ported" to Android version. While the execution of these new features might not yet as good as the iPhone version, the update showed you that Twitter is trying to bring a consistent design to every official Twitter app on every platform.

Now I'm currently wondering, will the Blackberry version gets an update soon?

SocialScope adds support for BlackBerry 6

Socialscope

Today, the popular Twitter client for BlackBerry platform, SocialScope (Lite), adds support for BlackBerry 6 platform in general, and especially for BlackBerry Torch. The version .147 comes in handy with several bug fixes, ensuring the app works in blazing fast speed with low battery utilization. They admit it's a big project and involving rewriting "an insane amount of code", as stated in their blog post.

Furthermore, version .147 comes with few new tricks:
  • Swipe left and right to switch tabs
  • When reading a message swipe left and right to switch message
  • Double tap a tab icon to go to the top of the message list
  • Search twitter from your home screen through universal search
  • Go to your friend’s profiles from the home screen through universal search
  • Crazy fast scrolling
  • Super low battery usage
Although it's said to be specialized for BlackBerry Torch, I am quite sure that it will work for other BlackBerry 6 utilizer, including Bold 9650, Bold 9780 and Curve 3G. SocialScope is an invitation-based Twitter client, currently available exclusively for BlackBerry, but plan to expand to other platforms, including for iOS and Android.

Twidroyd 4.0 brings LivePreview™ feature

Screen

If you're using Twidroyd on your Android phone, you'll probably noticed that the app is ready to be updated to version 4.0. The update brings a couple of changes, most notably some UI changes, a new top bar, a 'More' button & the LivePreview™.

Twidroyd 4.0 brings a new top bar which integrates the New Tweet button & Refresh button. This top bar design were probably made to follow the new Android UI design pattern, which we can also see this kind of pattern in Facebook & Twitter app in Android. My only complaint is, the top bar is a bit too small, thus tapping the buttons is sometimes a little bit hard. Some other change is the inclusion of the new 'more' button on the bottom right corner, if you tap this button it will pops up a couple of buttons including Profile, Accounts, Twittersphere, Trends, Settings and also a button to exit the app.

(download)

But surely the main new feature on Twidroyd 4.0 is the LivePreview™. LivePreview™ is a feature that can only work when you put your phone on landscape mode. On this mode, instead of expand the tweet list to cover the whole screen, Twidroyd 4.0 creates a two pane view, left pane is for the tweet list and right pane is to preview the tweet. The great thing about this is, if you select a tweet that has a link on it, Twidroyd will preview the content of the link inside the right pane. You can also filter the tweet list based on the tweets with a link, tweets without a link or simply show all tweets.

Twidroyd 4.0 is already available in Android Market, go get it now!

Collected thoughts about Nokia

Nokia_world

A few words about Nokia's new lineup unveiled at Nokia World this week.

There was no mention of MeeGo products or even a preview of how it will turn out, only that the company will have more to say about it later in the year. Every device  announced at the event was a Symbian^3 device. To me, much of Nokia's products seem to be nothing but more of the same. They may deliver upgraded specs over older models but nothing groundbreaking.

The following is a collection of my comments made on Twitter during the keynote speeches by Nokia's Executive VPs Niklas Savander and Anssi Vanjoki:

Nokia is desperately defensive at nokiaworld. Statements are more self assuring than openly convincing #nokiaworld

Really Niklas Savander? Nokia is back? Based on what you said today, nothing is convincing. #nokiaworld

As Nokia unveils its latest arsenal, it remains to be seen if they can withstand or even knock back those enemies at the gates. #nokiaworld.

Nokia may still own the largest smartphone market but its bottom line is nothing compared to Apple who controls 30% of industry profits.

If Nokia does make strong arguments with its phones, I'm expecting them to hit phones from companies not named Apple.

Apple's customers and fans are far too entrenched in the ecosystem to be significantly reduced. The undecideds will be the battleground

If Nokia is throwing its weight to the business side, watch out BlackBerry. Although it won't win over the BBM addicts in Indonesia.

Nokia rules in Germany, Italy and Spain, dogged by iOS in France and UK, irrelevant in the US http://bit.ly/ar8Not
Nokia is still undoubtedly the top smartphone producer in the world. MobileCrunch noted that they sell 260 thousand mobile devices per day. Apple sells 80 thousand per day, while the Android collective sells 200 thousand a day. On the other hand, Apple controls 30 percent of the industry's profits.

Niklas Savander made a point that you can't sustain a market with just one model. Maybe he's right for a company like Nokia. However for Apple, which he took several digs at during his speech, it's not necessarily the same strategy and so far, Apple's strategy works well. I noted on Twitter that Apple holds 30 percent of the mobile industry profit. I was mistaken. Apple holds 44 percent with only 3 percent of global mobile phone sales.

Nokia's enemy is not Apple, a tiny though very influential player in the industry. It's still got a significant portion of the market in Europe and Asia. Nokia should be worried more about those Androids that are coming to grab its market from every angle.

Twitter for iPhone 3.0.3 fixes crashing bug in iOS 3.1.x

Twitter_303

If you've been bummed by the fact that Twitter for iPhone has been crashing on your iPhone or iPod touch running iOS 3.1.x, be bummed no more as Apple has approved Twitter for iPhone 3.0.3 which lets you use the app once again.

We previously suggested iOS 3.1.x users to downgrade to Twitter for iPhone 3.0.1 as version 3.0.2 was unusable on that system. iPhone 3G and 3GS users as well as owners of 2nd and 3rd generation iPod touch could have simply update their iOS to 4.0 or 4.0.1 but those on the original iPhone and iPod touch had little option but to downgrade, or *gasp* use another Twitter app!

Unfortunately we also found out a while later that you could no longer perform searches, see the tweets in the trending topics or invoke the mentions tab in 3.0.1 although everything else on the app works fine. Strangely enough searches and mentions still work on Tweetie 1. Regardless, if you're using Twitter for iPhone on iOS 3.1.x, update your Twitter app now.

If you're already on iOS 4, this update fixes some display bugs which sometimes cut off the top portion of the screen upon rotating the device.

Fix for Twitter for iPhone 3.0.2 crashing on iOS 3.x

Photo-1

Two days ago Twitter for iPhone version 3.0.2 was out on the App Store and almost immediately iPhone and iPod touch users who have updated to the new version but are still on iOS 3 suddenly find themselves locked out of Twitter. The app would crash within seconds of launching. Those who are on iOS 4 as well as iPad users however don't seem to be affected.

Twitter's lead app developer, Loren Brichter posted these messages on Twitter hours after the app's launch. Not being a developer I have no idea what the first one means but it sounds like something that is causing problems for almost all iOS 3 users.

In the meantime, here's a way to get Twitter for iPhone working again on iOS 3 on iPod touch and iPhone. However you have to make sure you still have the older version (3.0.1) stored somewhere, either in the Trash, Recycle Bin, backup drive, or anywhere else in or attached to your computer.

1. Delete Twitter for iPhone from your device
2. Delete Twitter for iPhone from iTunes.
3. Drag Twitter for iPhone (3.0.1) from your backup location to iTunes
4. Plug in your device to your computer and sync it
5. Add Twitter for iPhone back to your device

This should get your Twitter for iPhone working again until Twitter releases a fix. If it's too troublesome or if you no longer have a copy, might I recommend using Twitterrific or Osfoora for iPhone. Or any other Twitter app to your fancy.

Again, iOS 4 users and iPad users don't seem to be affected by this crashing bug.

Twitterrific 3.0 hits the App Store

Twitterrific_3

Iconfactory has released Twitterrific 3.0 just in time for the iPhone 4 launch. The latest update to the oldest Twitter app for the iOS brings together the previously fragmented versions into just one app. Twitterrific for iPad, Twitterrific for iPhone, and Twitterrific Premium for iPhone have now been rolled into one ad-supported app curiously called Twitterrific for Twitter 3.0. While the app is free, there is an in-app fee of $4.99 if you wish to remove the ad and gain access to use multiple accounts.

Twitterrific 3 brings support for iPhone 4's retina display, Voice Over controls for the visually challenged, task switching, a brand new interface based on the iPad version, OAuth sign in, native and classic retweets, landscape mode, lists, a selection of image uploading services, a light theme which can be accessed separately from the Settings app, and more.

If you have Twitterrific for iPad and already paid for the full access, this version will recognize your purchase and you'll be able to use the app ad-free on your iPhone or iPod touch as well. You'll just have to go through the process as if you were going to pay for it again, but you won't be charged. Otherwise, you'll have to pay to remove the ads.

Confused yet? Basically, on the iPhone, Twitterrific 3 does not upgrade your installation of Twitterrific 2, it's a separate app. You can in fact have both apps installed on one iPhone. However, the older version will stop working once Twitter enacts its brand new sign on policy on August 16.

The new version has been completely redesigned to resemble the iPad version and is much more straight forward. There are some missing features from 2.0 but some will make their way back into the app.
