Collected thoughts about Nokia

Nokia_world

A few words about Nokia's new lineup unveiled at Nokia World this week.

There was no mention of MeeGo products or even a preview of how it will turn out, only that the company will have more to say about it later in the year. Every device  announced at the event was a Symbian^3 device. To me, much of Nokia's products seem to be nothing but more of the same. They may deliver upgraded specs over older models but nothing groundbreaking.

The following is a collection of my comments made on Twitter during the keynote speeches by Nokia's Executive VPs Niklas Savander and Anssi Vanjoki:

Nokia is desperately defensive at nokiaworld. Statements are more self assuring than openly convincing #nokiaworld

Really Niklas Savander? Nokia is back? Based on what you said today, nothing is convincing. #nokiaworld

As Nokia unveils its latest arsenal, it remains to be seen if they can withstand or even knock back those enemies at the gates. #nokiaworld.

Nokia may still own the largest smartphone market but its bottom line is nothing compared to Apple who controls 30% of industry profits.

If Nokia does make strong arguments with its phones, I'm expecting them to hit phones from companies not named Apple.

Apple's customers and fans are far too entrenched in the ecosystem to be significantly reduced. The undecideds will be the battleground

If Nokia is throwing its weight to the business side, watch out BlackBerry. Although it won't win over the BBM addicts in Indonesia.

Nokia rules in Germany, Italy and Spain, dogged by iOS in France and UK, irrelevant in the US http://bit.ly/ar8Not
Nokia is still undoubtedly the top smartphone producer in the world. MobileCrunch noted that they sell 260 thousand mobile devices per day. Apple sells 80 thousand per day, while the Android collective sells 200 thousand a day. On the other hand, Apple controls 30 percent of the industry's profits.

Niklas Savander made a point that you can't sustain a market with just one model. Maybe he's right for a company like Nokia. However for Apple, which he took several digs at during his speech, it's not necessarily the same strategy and so far, Apple's strategy works well. I noted on Twitter that Apple holds 30 percent of the mobile industry profit. I was mistaken. Apple holds 44 percent with only 3 percent of global mobile phone sales.

Nokia's enemy is not Apple, a tiny though very influential player in the industry. It's still got a significant portion of the market in Europe and Asia. Nokia should be worried more about those Androids that are coming to grab its market from every angle.
