RIM launching BlackBerry Locate Service for developers

RIM ready to launch service called Blackberry Locate Service for developers. Through this service, allowing developers to quickly access your location without having to fire up the device GPS. How to determine location using triangulation is actually not a new technology. Google Maps had previously been using triangulation methods to determine the location.

The new service can get your location in seconds using cellphone towers. This is similar to how the “My Location” service works in Google Maps. For application developers, Blackberry Locate Service allows developers to use their location data into their applications without relying on GPS. RIM hopes this Locate Service can stimulate the emergence of location-based applications such as encountered in Foursquare and Gowalla. If you want to using this feature, you have to using BlackBerry OS 5 on you device and equires a carrier that has enabled this feature.

BlackBerry Pearl 3G hits FCC

RIM has just handed over some variation of the BlackBerry Pearl 3G to the FCC for further certification. We know that RIM officially announced the BlackBerry Pearl 3G at WES 2010 with a promise of release in May.

The FCC has held up to their part by letting it pass and giving it a green light.  At this point it is anyone’s guess what the exact release dates will be. This BlackBerry Pearl series is quite interesting, besides having a SureType and Multitap input model of a typical BlackBerry Pearl series, BlackBerry Pearl 9105 model will have a keyboard with T9 input mode.

RIM teases us with a preview video of BlackBerry 6

Today, RIM's YouTube channel has released the first teaser video of the new BlackBerry 6 operating system. The two minutes video shows us a couple of features that most likely will be available in the new OS, including the much anticipated WebKit-based browser and also a multitouch gestures in the gallery app. While most of BlackBerry smartphone is a touch-less device, this video however, shows us the capability of BlackBerry 6 on (what I believe) a touch screen device and I admit it looks pretty good. So I think it'll be interesting to see the new OS on a touch-less device.

New BlackBerry WebKit browser demoed at MWC10

BlackBerry browser sucks? Yes, but soon will not anymore. After buying Torch Mobile that created IRIS browser -- scored 100/100 on ACID3 test -- RIM finally demoed its WebKit based browser at Mobile World Congress 2010.

The new browser will support HTML5, CSS3, DOM L3, maybe all the advanced things in web world. WebKit is the same engine  that powered Safari and Chrome.

The availability is still in questioned, but since this new technology will also support BlackBerry widgets, I am guessing there will be massive update to BlackBerry OS, a must actually. BlackBerry OS is considered obsolete, compared to faster OS like iPhone OS or Android.
