RIM to replace BlackBerry OS with the new QNX-developed OS

Blackberry_playbook_2

Following the announcement of the PlayBook tablet, a Vice President from RIM confirmed that the new OS from QNX will eventually replace the BlackBerry OS in the long run according to IntoMobile. While it may not happen with the next major update, Blackberry 7 may be the first step in the transition.

As Blackberry 6 is just coming out to a select number of existing phones, it's unlikely that we'll see the new OS on RIM's primary line of smartphones any time soon especially if version 7 will be the beginning of the shift. While the Blackberry Tablet OS may operate the way a touchscreen tablet should on the PlayBook, it remains to be seen what kind of experience the new QNX-developed OS will bring to RIM's smartphones.

Notably, RIM's approach with its new OS is the reverse of the path Apple took with the iOS. The Cupertino company launched the iOS on its iPhones before it introduced the iPad three years later even though apparently the iOS was developed from what was meant to be initially, a tablet OS.
