NITDroid project: Android ported to Nokia N900

The people behind the NITDroid project has been trying to get the Android OS to be fully ported to the Nokia N900 device for a while now, and it seems they are close to completion on it.

As we saw, one of the few things less on porting Android to N900 is the ability to make calls. A crucial feature for those users who really want to use the N900 device to make phone calls.

Here is a new video that shows both incoming and outgoing calls on the Nokia N900, along with cellular data:

iOS4 review by Ars Technica

Ars Technica has gone and done their usual epic review of new OS releases, this time, obviously for iOS 4 which was just released officially over iTunes 9.2 moments ago. The seven page review by Jacqui Cheng and Clint Ecker is about as detailed as they come and if you have Safari 5, it's a good chance to check out the Reader feature which will pull all seven pages into one scrollable screen.

If you're still waiting for your copy to finish downloading, go check out the review so you'll be ready when it finishes. Good chance it'll be done before you finish reading unless your broadband connection has problems downloading a 378MB file.

BlackBerry OS 6.0 coming on June/July ?

The latest version of the BlackBerry platform might be competing with the iPhone and the Nexus One. Things are looking very promising for BlackBerry users who have been waiting patiently for a first real glimpse at OS 6.0 and for its ultimate release.

There are some screenshot show the front of the display screen BlackBerry handsets without revealing its shape. However, judging from the size of the screen, I think this screenshot taken from Storm2 device which has touchscreen features.

Here are some of the key details:

  • As expected, it's an evolution of the existing BlackBerry OS
  • RIM has implemented kinetic scrolling with rubber banding throughout the OS (more fluid experience)
  • RIM has implemented multitouch throughout the OS - web browser, photos (including pinch to zoom!)
  • Re-vamped inbox - w/ large thumbnails to identify the type of message (facebook, twitter, etc.) and features built-in RSS.
  • Homescreen changeup: No widget support, but RIM has implemented something called Pages.
  • On touchscreen device, new modal popup with gestures - tap and hold, pops up an icon set (menu) with context menu items
  • Updated media player, photos app and of course the WebKit browser!!
For non touchscreen users, the experience will still be much improved. Tabbed browsing is going to rock, and many of the UI improvements to email will make the whole experience easier on the eyes. Being able to see a quick icon preview of an incoming message will make things a little more efficient. That being said, RIM’s first party apps will surely play a big role in OS 6, allowing them to integrate with all the new features.

In terms of release date, it looks like we might see this actually hit the market in the June/July timeframe. This is incredible and it might mean an announcement at WES next week.

No copy/paste on Windows Phone 7

Engadget reported that Microsoft has decided to go iPhone OS 2.0 on everyone when it comes to Windows Phone 7. First of all, it will have apps that are available only on the Windows Phone Marketplace, similar to Apple’s App Store for iPhone OS. Secondly, copy/paste will not be a feature. They just won't have it.

Supporters had been trumpeting the announcement that Windows Phone 7 will be better than iPhone OS because it will support Flash, but suddenly the Redmond Giant announced that the new mobile OS won’t have copy/cut/paste function.

The iPhone was ridiculed for not having this apparently important function until Apple relented in 2009. Relented, finally figured out a decent way to implement it, or took a feature from a jailbreak add-on, you be the judge, but regardless, it was finally built in in iPhone OS 3.0, and there was much rejoicing.

So it comes as quite a surprise that at MIX10, Microsoft told everyone it’s not going to be in Windows Phone 7 even more so when in Windows Mobile it has always been available. According to Microsoft, even Office users will not be needing copy/paste.

CNET quoted Todd Brix, a Windows Phone executive saying, “We don’t enable copy & paste and we do that very intentionally.” He continues, "It's actually an intentional design decision," he said. "We try to anticipate what the user wants so copy and paste isn't necessary."

Given that Windows Phone will have an Office suite like other smartphones, it will be interesting how they get around the issue when it comes to dealing with tables, cells, and general actions in those apps. While a handheld device may not be an ideal or even practical way to work on documents, it’s handy to have that ability given that people are beginning to increase their time spent with such devices as opposed to the traditional portable computers.
