Opera_browser_logo

Opera Mobile 11 is already available for Android and Symbian OS but Opera it seems not going to develop the Opera Mobile for Windows Phone platform. The reason is very clear, because the market share of Windows Phone is considered unfavorable for Opera.

"The mobile landscape is changing and Microsoft has Moved Their Efforts away from the Windows Mobile operating system. No new devices have been launched for Some time and the market share is falling. As a third party developer and a business, that is a reality That Opera Software has to adjust to. "Dag Olav Norem said on his blogpost at MyOpera.

Opera Mobile 10 and Opera Mini 5.1 for Windows Mobile will continue to be available for download from Opera Software's download page.

Apple approves Opera mini for iPhone

After 20 days, eight hours and 31 minutes, Apple has approved Opera mini to be made available for free on the App Store.

I immediately checked the App Store as soon as I heard the news and surprise, surprise, there it was, Opera Mini Web browser by Opera Software ASA.

So is it the competition worthy of knocking off Safari from my dock?

In short, a big fat no. It is absolutely horrible. It's such a bad app I'm deleting it from my iPhone as soon as I hit send on this post.

Why is it horrible? Not all websites render properly on this browser. On several sites some links would disappear. Or at least it appears that way. They're still there but the text goes missing, leaving blank spaces within paragraphs for example. A refresh fixes this but it happens from time to time.

Text fields in Opera mini do not support autocorrect which has been an important part of typing on iPhone OS.

Typing on restricted text fields like on twitter's mobile site or other third party twitter web apps is unrestricted. You can go all the way past 140 characters and you won't realize it.

Rotating the iPhone would normally zoom or widen a website in Safari but Opera mini does not do that. Instead it maintains the width on portrait mode in landscape and shows a blank column on the remaining space.

How Opera mini displays a website is just plain bad. When you're used to how beautiful Safari renders web pages, you tend to take it for granted. Opera mini makes you really appreciate the hard work Apple and the WebKit team took on making sites look great on the iPhone. All the rendering and processing is done on Opera's servers and you get a seriously compressed version which is why it's really fast.

By fast I mean blazing fast, Opera mini opens sites almost in an instant, it has a neat tabbed browsing interface, it's ideal for those whose net access is limited by speed or quota because it delivers compressed web pages instead of the real thing, and it's fast.

It has an option to display a mobile optimized version of a site, it let's you decide to display reduced or full resolution images, it's really fast, it has a bookmark sync service with your Opera account, it has a speed dial page which has since been copied by Safari and Chrome, and it lets you save pages to open later when you're offline. Oh did I mention it's fast?

By the way, it also doesn't do Flash and is horrible with Acid3 tests, then again it's not really what you would call a traditional browser so you wouldn't really expect it to do well on those tests.

Try it if you will but I wouldn't wish this app on a sick dog.

Opera Mini "count up" for iPhone's App Store submission

Iphone-operamini-countup

Opera diligently puts a "count up" for counting up the days taken for its Opera Mini to be approved (or not) by Apple to get into iPhone's App Store. This is definitely an open challenge (in funny way, of course) by Opera to test Apple approval board. Opera Mini basically doesn't do anything (no code interpretation) in device as all things are processed by Opera servers. The only reason to decline this app is basically duplicating core iPhone functionality.

Below is the video on how fast Opera Mini renders pages in iPhone:

All Opera Mini 5 in Indonesia have Telkomsel brand?

(download)

We reported a month ago that Telkomsel is Opera's preferred partner in Indonesia. But, I don't realize that this agreement means all Opera Mini (especially version 5) used in Indonesia will have Telkomsel brand on front loading page, no matter what your operator is.

I captured this screenshot just now, something I didn't notice yesterday. Beside front page, Telkomsel's page is on default bookmark page too, along with other Indonesian's selected sites, e.g: Vivanes and detikcom. Bear in mind that I don't use Telkomsel as my preferred network on this phone.

Can anyone confirm this?

Update: confirmed, it's also occur in Nokia and Sony Ericsson

No more beta for Opera Mini 5 and Opera Mobile 10

Htc-hd2-vtabs

A final version of Opera Mini 5 and Opera Mobile 10, at last. After months of Beta 1 and Beta 2, Opera for mobiles left the Beta title at home and become the default offer when you hit http://m.opera.com. I dunno exactly the difference between Beta 2 and final version, but hopefully less bugs will be found until next release.

Opera Mini 5 is available for all Java-based and BlackBerry phones, although still in beta for Android and Windows Mobile. Opera Mobile 10, however, is available only for Windows Mobile and Symbian-based phones. Grab it now and become the part of acclaimed most used browser on Earth.

Opera Mini 5 beta launched on Android, and here's our quick review

Today, Opera launched the newest beta version of the world's most popular browser for mobile phones, Opera Mini 5, on the Android platform. Opera Mini 5 offers a fast and content-efficient web experience to any Android handset. Sounds good right? Well, let's check it out!

The first thing that I will remember about Opera Mini 5 is that, it looks really simple and very easy to navigate. But simplicity is not the best feature on Opera Mini 5, the killer feature of Opera Mini 5 is of course the speed. It's fast, it's really fast, almost twice the speed of the default Android browser. Here's why, the Opera servers is actually the main actor behind the speed of the Mini 5, it cache and compress the pages for you, so the pages that were sent to your phone, through Mini 5, is actually smaller than what you normally would have if you use the default browser and that is why, Mini 5 renders the pages a lot faster than the default browser. Tab browsing on Mini 5 is a very nice feature, switching from one tab to another works very good, it's not that snappy, but does the job.

But if you want to feel the desktop like web experience, you can't expect a lot from Mini 5, the default browser does this a lot better. For example, JavaScript handler on default browser is way a lot better than Mini 5, thus opening a page with a very complex JavaScript with Mini 5, is a pain, there will be lots of overlapping contents all over the place. There's also no multi touch available on Mini 5, so if your a pinch-to-zoom junkie, you're out of luck. But you can always double tap the screen to zoom though, and it works pretty snappy too.

Overall, if I was in a hurry to open a webpage, then I'll definitely use the Mini 5, it's speed is second to none. But if I want to feel the full web experience, I'd rather use the default browser or Dolphin browser. The Mini 5 is still in beta version, but it still has a lot of room to grow and so far it's looking really good.
