Halal Scanner for iPhone

For Muslims living in non-Islam oriented nations, it can get quite challenging buying groceries especially if they’re the kind who are very observant when it comes to food. For many, it’s very important they ensure that the food they consume is halal. Halal in general means things that are legal but it is much more widely used as a term to describe food and drinks that Muslims can consume.

Often people refer to friends or the local Muslim council to find out what food is halal but there’s always new or unchecked products and the task falls to the individual. If the person happens to be toting an iPhone, however, it needs not be so difficult because guess what, there’s an app for that. Halal Scanner is one such app.

The app works best with iPhone 3GS because it requires precision photography of the ingredients list for the OCR software to kick in but owners of other iPhones or iPod touches shouldn’t fret because there’s also a manual search mode. Note that it will only look up the names and numbers of food additives, not every ingredient. Using scanning, there’s a risk of inaccuracy if the photo is not very accurate, and of course, keep in mind there are other ingredients. While this is not a total solution, it helps take that ease of mind one step further.

Halal Scanner costs US $3.99 and requires iPhone OS 3.1.3.

Leaked information about Malaysia's DiGi iPhone price plan

Leaked_information_about_Malay.zip (544 KB)

We covered this news previously about DiGi to be the next operator to offer iPhone in Malaysia. Yet no price plan is confirmed until the D-day. Today, there's a riot, as someone at @biznewsMY has unlocked a leaked information about DiGi's iPhone price plan.

This news brings surprise (and shock) to official DiGi twitter account, @DiGi_Telco. The DiGi's official iPhone launch will be held tomorrow, March 31, at Penang Beach Street DC.

I am kinda dizzy actually reading the price plan, but DiGi promises to bring cheaper plan, compared to Maxis. What I noted, however, DiGi states to give unlimited Internet Roaming with max MYR36 per day in selected countries, that around US$11. Quite promising.

Thailand adds more operator to sell iPhone, DTAC is in the house

Another iPhone exclusivity been banished from neighboring country. Thailand previously enjoyed such thing when True Move was the sole distributor of iPhone last year. Around 100,000 iPhone units are reported being sold by True Move. Now rival DTAC offers similar thing for iPhone 3G and 3GS.

Being officially launched last weekend, DTAC provides a (should be) attractive price packages. Unfortunately I can't read any Thai font, all I can see there are two price packages for iPhone 3GS, THB22,900 (US$700) and THB24,500 (US$750). If you want to obtain comprehensive information (and know how to read Thai), don't hesitate to look up at http://www.dtac.co.th/iphone/index.php.

As far as I know, both True Move and DTAC are not the largest operator in the Thailand. It's AIS which still holds the crown. Until now, Apple and AIS are still in talk about iPhone, but this move by DTAC may stimulate AIS to bring the conversation into action.

In Thailand, the condition is more and less like in Indonesia. BlackBerry is a boom there and iPhone seller still figure out to find niche.

Malaysia's DiGi to sell iPhone, no more monopoly by Maxis

Following Singapore, Malaysia to end monopoly era of iPhone selling when DiGi -- 3rd largest operator in country -- announced to join the party. According to DiGi's CEO, they will offer iPhone 3G and 3GS in coming months after signing three years agreement with Apple.

This deal ends monopoly by Maxis, country's largest, that solely offer iPhone 3G and 3GS since last year. Previously, neighboring country Singapore also ended iPhone exclusivity when both StarHub and M1 have the same opportunity as SingTel. Yet, not all Malaysia operators are in the house since Celcom doesn't do the same the thing.

Malaysia's market is quite hefty for expansion since mobile phones ownership is now larger than number of population. Total population of Malaysia is 27 million and the country has already implemented Mobile Number Portability (MNP) allowing subscribers to switch operator without changing their phone numbers. The competition now lies more on quality offered.

Indonesia's Telkomsel unveils new dedicated iPhone site and slightly different price package

Previously we covered Press Release from Indonesia's Telkomsel regarding the launch of iPhone 3GS and its pricing. Today, we find out that Telkomsel has launched new dedicated iPhone site at http://iphone.telkomsel.com. There are tons of links there, but my first concern is on the Price Plan menu. When clicked, it will bring you to a pop up menu, displaying the price planner. iPhone credit scheme is supported by Citibank, BNI, BCA, Bank Mandiri, and Bank Danamon.

Yet, you won't find the official price scheme. I finally see this banner at old site, unveiling something slightly different. There are only 3 Turbo packages, so there's no simPATI bundling there and it's not explicitly saying in-front payment or monthly installment for any package. As this banner is considered official, why there's no specific information regarding installment as stated before (e.g: IDR 275,500 or 380,000 per month).

Can anyone clarify this?

Update: apparently the new iPhone site is now being "locked" by Telkomsel, saying you need to enter username and password. Leaked before official release?

Breaking Rumor: Telkomsel iPhone 3GS 19 February

According to Lucky Cosa from the id-iphone mailing list, Telkomsel
will finally release iPhone 3GS in Indonesia on February 19, which is
9 days from today. The 3GS supposedly will be unlocked, unlike the 3G
which was sold locked to the carrier between March and July 2009.
Telkomsel changed its mind and unlocked their 3G iPhones for those who
perform a restore to the latest OS.

The cost will apparently be between 7.5-8.5 million. Cosa claims the
32GB will be sold at Rp 8.3 million which means the 16GB may be sold
at around the Rp 7.5 million mark. The approximately Rp 1 million
difference is derived from the price difference with the 3G models.

At this moment it's unclear whether it includes the data package or it
will be available separately. There is also no information whether
Telkomsel will still make the 8GB available although Apple still lists
the 8GB iPhone 3G as a current model. It is however, quite likely that
they will keep the 8GB 3G to ward off competitors on the lower price
points.

There is still no official word from Telkomsel regarding the 3GS.

Malaysia's Maxis and Limkokwing Uni to encourage iPhone 3GS usage

This is something that can be added as one alternative to push iPhone sales (esp. for Indonesia's Telkomsel). Limkokwing University and Maxis -- as exclusive partner for iPhone -- made an agreement to encourage iPhone 3GS usage among students and faculty members by offering subsidized rates and tools (apps?) for viewing course notes and downloading study materials.

Maxis will be bundling the device with several service packages that will feature free phone calls, MMSes and SMSes between the subscribers at Limkokwing, and more.

“We are also working to introduce prepaid and postpaid plans for the staff and students, and will even introduce a leasing scheme to lower the take-up cost,” said Fitri Abdullah, Maxis’ vice-president and head of enterprise and carrier business.

For added convenience, there will be a Maxis centre set up on the campus to provide onsite customer service.

Please note that although encouraged, it's not a compulsory, stated Limkokwing VP. We don't have much information about iPhone data sales in Malaysia, but obviously Maxis is doing their homework better.

The launch of Android Phones in China are being postponed

Following the dispute between Google & China, China Unicom, has postponed the launch of its first Android phones, which supposed to happen this Wednesday.

Google Inc. spokeswoman Marsha Wang said "It is postponed" for an indefinitely time and also declined to give a reason for the decision. We still don't know whether Google are going to cancel their launch of Android phones in China or they're just going to reschedule the launch date.

And this matter could affect both Motorola and Samsung, which their device are supposed to be launched by Unicom. Motorola, in particular, had hoped to use the Google OS to gain additional market share in China. One of two Motorola device are prepared to supports Mobile's TD-SCDMA network.

On the contrary of this matter, the rival of Google's Android phones, the iPhone 3G and 3GS, which are also being sold by Unicom, could gain a benefit because of this setbacks. Unicom says it has sold over 100,000 iPhones since launching the device on October 30.

Telkomsel iPhone 3GS gets a release date?

Late last month we saw OKEshop outlets sporting actual iPhone 3GS banners at their shops and just today, we received word from id-mac mailing list that a customer service officer at Grapari in Bandung claims that Telkomsel will finally release iPhone 3GS on January 20, 2010. Grapari is of course Telkomsel's official retail and customer service outlet.

With two weeks ahead of the supposed launch date, there is still no official word or press release about the launch although the signs are pointing there. There is currently no word about pricing or packaged plans either. Unlike the big hype surrounding the albeit late iPhone 3G launch last March, the buzz around the 3GS in Indonesia is almost nonexistent.

Telkomsel had been pushing the 8GB and 16GB 3G iPhones out the door since September by selling them for practically at cost and while it still is not enough to meet the company's supposed target of 220 thousand units, looks like they've managed to push out enough units to finally sell the 3GS.

The pre-order page for the 3GS has been around since September although the company had only been publicly sending notices about it early in December.

Buried under the hype of BlackBerrys and Nexians, Telkomsel seemed to resign to the fact that people weren't going to flock to buy their iPhones in droves. Those who were really enthusiastic about Apple's smartphone chose to go the private import way. They bought iPhone 3GS from countries such as Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia where they can buy them unlocked for around the same price as a local iPhone 3G.

Hopefully with an additional two month lead time compared to their previous effort, along with nine months of experience, Telkomsel has figured out a way to avoid the disastrous 2009 campaign and start marketing iPhone 3GS properly.
