Tumblr releases version 2.0 for iPhone

Photo

Today Tumblr rolled out a completely rewritten iPhone app. Gone is the two panel interface replaced by a tabbed interface that’s becoming more and more common on recent iOS apps and at a glance would remind you of Instagram. The center tab is the primary activity tab for posting content with options to choose which Tumblr account to post it from.

The new app introduces post settings on the composition screen, accessible by swiping the screen to the right. While on the post settings page, swiping to the left takes you back to the composition page.

Due to the way iOS apps are traditionally designed, it’s very tempting to tap on the top left button on the screen where the back/return button is usually located, to go back to composing a post. You don’t want to do this as that position is used by a cancel button that thankfully prompts you with an option to save or clear the post instead of abandoning it outright.

On the settings page, Tumblr finally adds a custom tweet option so now tweets don’t need to come out looking like a mess.

Now that there’s a tab for Likes, you can look at all the posts that you’ve marked on Tumblr directly in the app without having to go to the website on a desktop, notebook, or tablet computer.

Tumblr now allows account creation right on the app as well as reading and replying to messages, recognizing the fact that having to go to the website to do all this is becoming tedious and that for a lot of people, the mobile device is the primary interface to the Internet.

Overall, the app is now much more comprehensive, more usable, and more practical with an interface that makes it easier for you to post more frequently to all the multiple Tumblr blogs that you may have.

PhoneItPad is an application hack --or in the iOS term is known as Jailbreak-- that will be able to change the iPad 3G tablet device into an iPhone.

PhoneItpad apps developed by PhoneIslam, formerly known to make a jailbreak for iPhone 3G that has the ability to FaceTime functionality.

With PhoneItPad apps, its allows the device to be full fuctional iPhone-like device so that your iPad 3G will be able for voice call, send SMS and FaceTime with the existing number of your SIMCard.

Unfortunately this application is still under development and will soon be available on Cydia AppStore in the near future.

Stop your toddler from deleting apps from iOS devices

P1401

I've been there and surely you've been there too. You let someone handle your iPhone, or better yet, your three year old got hold of your iPhone, and in typical toddler mastery deletes one or more apps from the springboard.

If it's an app that doesn't store data in the phone, you just dodged a bullet. You can go straight to the App Store and download it again for free. Even if it's a paid app.

If it stores data like for example Good Reader, or perhaps games like Tiny Wings or Angry Birds that track your achievements, that's when you'll start to get sweaty. Those data will not return to your phone. You can't restore from the phone's backup either (well you can but it's an overkill method to recover data in a single app).

As they say prevention is better than cure, so I'm going to show you how to make sure you don't get to that stage.

I think it's new in 4.3, or perhaps 4.2 (I no longer hold a 4.2 device) but navigate your way to the Settings app, open General, go to the Restrictions entry and enable it.

Once you enter your chosen passcode and activated Restrictions, go to the entry that says Deleting Apps just below the one that says Installing Apps. Turn it off. Turn off Deleting Apps. You won't be able to delete apps from your iOS device anymore but that also means your three year old won't suddenly send your crucial documents or saved games to oblivion anymore.

You can thank me later.

Infinity_blade_16-660x439

Are you guys ready to feast your eyes with the 'eye-popping' new game by Epic Games, Infinity Blade? Well you better be ready, as IntoMobile reports that the game will be hitting the App store on December 9th. Yes this iOS-only game will be released in less than two weeks from today.

If you wanna know why there has been so much talk about this game, well here's two reasons, Epic Games & Unreal Engine. The game will look extremely gorgeous, if you think Rage HD is beautiful, then I think this will top that. This is probably because the game is powered by Epic Games' mobile version of Unreal Engine. Yea you read that right, thats the same engine that Epic's uses to create Gears of War series, only this time its the mobile version. Don't get fooled by the 'mobile' title, because it looks really really gorgeous. Check this out if you don't believe me (crank it to HD version)

Infinity Blade will be available for $5.99 and it also supports both the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4.

Collected thoughts about Nokia

Nokia_world

A few words about Nokia's new lineup unveiled at Nokia World this week.

There was no mention of MeeGo products or even a preview of how it will turn out, only that the company will have more to say about it later in the year. Every device  announced at the event was a Symbian^3 device. To me, much of Nokia's products seem to be nothing but more of the same. They may deliver upgraded specs over older models but nothing groundbreaking.

The following is a collection of my comments made on Twitter during the keynote speeches by Nokia's Executive VPs Niklas Savander and Anssi Vanjoki:

Nokia is desperately defensive at nokiaworld. Statements are more self assuring than openly convincing #nokiaworld

Really Niklas Savander? Nokia is back? Based on what you said today, nothing is convincing. #nokiaworld

As Nokia unveils its latest arsenal, it remains to be seen if they can withstand or even knock back those enemies at the gates. #nokiaworld.

Nokia may still own the largest smartphone market but its bottom line is nothing compared to Apple who controls 30% of industry profits.

If Nokia does make strong arguments with its phones, I'm expecting them to hit phones from companies not named Apple.

Apple's customers and fans are far too entrenched in the ecosystem to be significantly reduced. The undecideds will be the battleground

If Nokia is throwing its weight to the business side, watch out BlackBerry. Although it won't win over the BBM addicts in Indonesia.

Nokia rules in Germany, Italy and Spain, dogged by iOS in France and UK, irrelevant in the US http://bit.ly/ar8Not
Nokia is still undoubtedly the top smartphone producer in the world. MobileCrunch noted that they sell 260 thousand mobile devices per day. Apple sells 80 thousand per day, while the Android collective sells 200 thousand a day. On the other hand, Apple controls 30 percent of the industry's profits.

Niklas Savander made a point that you can't sustain a market with just one model. Maybe he's right for a company like Nokia. However for Apple, which he took several digs at during his speech, it's not necessarily the same strategy and so far, Apple's strategy works well. I noted on Twitter that Apple holds 30 percent of the mobile industry profit. I was mistaken. Apple holds 44 percent with only 3 percent of global mobile phone sales.

Nokia's enemy is not Apple, a tiny though very influential player in the industry. It's still got a significant portion of the market in Europe and Asia. Nokia should be worried more about those Androids that are coming to grab its market from every angle.

Apple relaxes iOS development policies, publishes App Store guidelines

Apple has made a dramatic change in attitude towards third party development tools and at the same time, give app developers the clarity that they need to confidently publish apps on the App Store. For developers, Christmas has come early this year.

Apple today released a statement to declare that it has made changes to its Developer Program License to allow other development tools to be used on to create iOS apps.

In particular, we are relaxing all restrictions on the development tools used to create iOS apps, as long as the resulting apps do not download any code. This should give developers the flexibility they want, while preserving the security we need.

Earlier this year Apple began to restrict iOS developers to use only authorized tools and said that alternative methods are detrimental to the quality of applications being produced. While this is  certainly debatable, Apple has been sticking to its guns and defending its decisions at any possible opportunity.

With the new policies being put in place, developers are now free to create apps for the iOS using tools they see fit as long as they do not use private programming interfaces.

Some are saying that the door has been opened for Adobe's Flash CS5 to be used to create iPhone apps although that remains to be seen. This decision does not mean iOS devices will run Flash.

The App Store Review Guidelines has also been published containing very clear, concise, and  straightforward language with regards to what can be expected from developers when submitting applications for review.

Apple released the guidelines specifically for registered developers but Engadget has made it available to anyone who wishes to read through the rather comical document. it is surprisingly easy to understand.

Some of the gems in the document include:

We have over 250,000 apps in the App Store. We don't need any more Fart apps

If your app is rejected, we have a Review Board that you can appeal to. If you run to the press and trash us, it never helps.
