Firefox 4 Beta 1 for Android and Maemo is now available

F4b1

The title above is exactly the title given in Mozilla blog post announcing the availability of Firefox 4 (Mobile) Beta for Android and Maemo (Nokia N900). Firefox 4 Beta -- also known with codename Fennec -- includes several features such as:

  • Syncs bookmarks, tabs, history, passwords, and form data to and from your phone
  • Lets anyone write add-ons that can customize any part of the user interface
  • Uses the Jaegermonkey JIT, which is getting faster all the time
  • Supports web technologies like SVG, ECMAScript 5, WebM, and HTTP Strict Transport Security
Firefox 4 requires Android 2.0 or later and compatible ARMv7 processor, with minimum 40MB of available storage. With these requirements, the recommended Android phones to test this Beta 1 are:
  • Acer Liquid E
  • Dell Streak
  • HTC Desire
  • HTC Desire Z (T-Mobile G2)
  • HTC Droid Incredible
  • HTC EVO 4G
  • Google's Nexus One
  • Motorola Droid 2
  • Motorola Droid X
  • Motorola Milestone (Verizon Droid)
  • Samsung Galaxy S I9000 (and its variants)
According to Matt Brubeck, Firefox Mobile Engineer, the next Beta 2 will have smaller demand of storage, more speed improvement, and new Android skin. So if you don't want to sacrifice your bandwidth for this Beta 1, I recommend you to wait for the next release. But if you insist, try to download from this page.

Mobile-firefox-gets-its-own-lo

Following the release of the RC1 version of Firefox for mobile device, two days ago, Mozilla's finally announce that Firefox is now available for Nokia's Maemo platform.

Bringing Firefox to mobile devices is the next step toward fulfilling Mozilla’s mission of providing one Web that everyone can access, regardless of device or location. Secure, powerful, and customizable, Firefox is the most modern mobile Web browser available and is optimized for a mobile experience. Key design principles are at the heart of the mobile browsing experience including minimal typing, seamless synchronization with desktop Firefox and the ability to take your Firefox with you, to name a few.

Version 1.0 is available for download right now, and it come with a couple of features that has been available since the RC1 release, such as:
  • Awesome Bar - Go to your favorite sites in just a couple of keystroke
  • Weave Sync - its like the Google Chorme Bookmark Sync, but far more powerful as it sync not just your bookmark, but also your Firefox tabs, history and passwords between your desktop and mobile device
  • Add-ons - You can customize Firefox on your mobile device just like you customize Firefox on your PC, for instance, install YouTube Enabler on Firefox Mobile then you're all set to watch YouTube videos straight from your phone.
  • Tabbed browsing and more
You can download and learn more by visiting Firefox.com/mobile straight from your Nokia's N900 browser. Mozilla's wiki site also said that, while the Firefox for Mobile device is currently only available for the Maemo 5 platform, other platform such as WinMo, Android, Blackberry and iPhone will also have the app in the coming months.

Firefox coming to Android this February? Not really

Fennec

News spreading all over the community about the possibility of mobile version of Firefox (usually known as Fennec) to come to Android platform. AndroidSpin initially raised this discussion claiming that it will be here on February based on discussion (on German) at Camp Firefox.de

Apparently the translation has misled to state such false information. AndroidandMe tries to fix this by quoting a better version of German translation:

Sorry for responding in English, I’ll include a Google translation below. I am one of the engineers at Mozilla working on the Android port, and we are many months away from having an alpha version of Firefox for Android. We’re still working on low-level software porting like getting the Netscape Portable Runtime (NSPR) layer working correctly on the platform, and there are many issues to be solved. We don’t yet have a feeling for when the work will be done, but if you want to follow our progress, you can look on our Mozilla wiki at https://wiki.mozilla.org/Android

So that's it. Firefox mobile for Android won't come on February or any sooner, but we could expect it comes in beta version in second half of the year.
