Nexian phones to feature built-in Facebook app

P1351

Capitalizing on the popularity of Facebook in Indonesia, the country's largest mobile phone company, Nexian, will include its own, officially sanctioned Facebook app in its new line of phones.

Back in November, TechCrunch's Sarah Lacy called out Facebook for practically neglecting the Indonesian market despite the super rapid adoption of the social network in the country. Shortly after, the company made a call back to Nexian following its repeated attempts to contact the Palo Alto-based company.

Apparently Nexian had been looking to get Facebook to add its app into the company's phones. These won't be Facebook phones but phones with a built-in Facebook app.

The Nexian Facebook app is identical in all aspects to the iPhone and Android versions. Despite having been developed in-house, it is an official Facebook app right down to authentication, icons, interface, everything.

Interestingly Google was the more responsive one with respect to communication between companies but Facebook managed to pull off the deal with Nexian much quicker. Integration of Google's search bar still has yet to happen.

The new Facebook-infused phones are available today and owners of older Nexian phones should be able to bring their phones to a Nexian service outlet of they wish to have the Facebook app installed soon.

Facebook for Android updated with Places & Groups

20101104_042906

Following the Facebook's event today, the company brings a new update to its Android app. The new update includes Places and also Groups along with the new Single Sign On feature. Places was launched earlier this year for the iOS platform. Places is pretty similar to Foursquare or Gowalla which allows you to check-in to interesting places (eg. Restaurants, Movie Theater.) Places is currently only works for selected region, unfortunately it is not available for Indonesia yet.

Groups is another new feature that the version 1.4 has. You can view groups and also its members. It has all the basic functionality including text posts and also photos. Unfortunately, for some reason I couldn't get this working. After I tap the Groups it will keeps on loading, but didn't show me anything.

Notification system is also gets an update for the Android version. Instead of redirecting you to its mobile site after you tap the notification, now it will take you back to the app.

No Places on your new Facebook iPhone app? Here's why

Earlier today Facebook unveiled Places, a location based component to their ever growing social network site that lets you check in to places. Whether it's going to obliterate or boost other services such as Gowalla or Foursquare is a matter for a different blog.

What we're interested in here is the fact that the Facebook iPhone app has been updated to version 3.2 Supposedly already supporting Places, it's meant to have the Places icon right in the center of the app's home screen.

Apparently while Places is only live in the US right now and the app has been updated, Facebook is taking things a little slowly. It's fully aware of its more than half a million strong user base and to avoid crashing their servers, they're rolling this feature out in waves instead of implementing it for everyone immediately. Not all US based users can join the fun and certainly not internationally yet.

If you're among the select group of early Places adopters, you'll see a slightly rearranged home screen on your Facebook app. The Notes app will no longer appear as it makes way for a link to Places.

Other updates in Facebook 3.2 include privacy setting for individual updates, ability to see all recipients of inbox messages, and uploading photos and videos in the background for iOS 4 users (iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4)

Facebook for Android gets a major update

Facebook-on-android

If you ask me and probably most of Android users about Facebook App, one thing that came into our mind is that the app is inferior compared to the iPhone's or Blackberry's. The interface is ugly and most of its feature is basically a wrapper of its mobile webpage. But not anymore, last night Facebook just released a new update for Android and its awesome.

How not to promote your new phone, by Nokia

Eksismeter

I wanna know what the hell were those people at Nokia were thinking when they came up with this stupid, idiotic, useless, pointless, moronic, inane, dumb, stupid,  "game" called Nokia C3 Eksismeter. No, I will not give them a hand by linking to their website.

Nokia C3 is a phone that they're launching in Indonesia in the near future and to boost awareness, they're running a social media based game where the game asks, "Lame or Happening?"

It takes advantage of people's narcissistic tendencies on social media by measuring activities on Facebook and Twitter and compare them with other people's. You get points and badges based on your social media activity, which is apparently determined by how often and how quick you can add the number of your friends or followers as well as how often you pimp Nokia on your status messages. Apparently people like to measure their life's worth by how many friends they have on Twitter and on Facebook. Shallow much?

Seesmic for iPhone finally out on the App Store

The big eyed raccoon has finally made it to the iPhone. Seesmic today has released Seesmic for iPhone, its multi-service social networking client which hooks up to Facebook, Twitter and Ping.FM. The long awaited app is available for free from the App Store and weighs in at a meager 1.6 MB.

Seesmic for iPhone presents itself as a panel-based application which lets you assign multiple Twitter accounts, searches, lists, trending topics, Facebook account, and other services on individual panels. Similar to the iPhone's own home screen, Seesmic lets you add panel after panel and will add pages as it sees fit. The panels can be rearranged and removed by holding down on one panel just like managing iPhone apps. On each timeline, the panels are represented on the top left with an identifying icon for easy switching between the views.

This app features Evernote integration to save tweets, notes, and links to the online storage service. If you have Evernote installed, it will immediately send the selected tweet to that app. Unfortunately this means quitting Seesmic. There doesn't seem to be support for Instapaper, however.

If you have multiple accounts setup on Seesmic you can send your update simultaneously even across different services. Official and unofficial retweets are supported and there's an option to choose between using RT and via for the old retweet method from the app's settings which is located in the Settings app.

Facebook 0 launches

Zero

Facebook has finally launched Facebook 0, a mobile website which incurs zero data fee when used with certain providers around the world. In other words, free access to Facebook. Initially announced back in February as Zero. 0.facebook.com will only be accessible from supported mobile networks, even from touchscreen phones. Subscribers of other operators can still access m.facebook.com.

Seems that Facebook had been really hard at work in reaching their mobile customers, realizing that mobile is the new platform for web engagements. With much more people connected to the internet via their mobile devices compared to desktops or notebooks, mobile sites are becoming more important as the cost of owning one is far less than owning a traditional computer.

Facebook 0 is different from Facebook Lite which was shut down not too long ago. Apparently it was an experiment by Facebook to see how its users interact with a limited set of functionality. It is also different from Facebook touch which is available for touchscreen devices such as those running iPhone OS, webOS, and Android.

Facebook-mad Indonesians will be happy to know that free Facebook access will be available from three providers, Axis, Telkomsel, and 3, with XL Axiata support coming soon. Around the world, 54 operators are supported over 46 countries with several countries having multiple carrier access. Facebook plans to roll out 0 with further carrier support as the time comes.

Facebook Android App gets Inbox support

Facebookdr-198x300

Any Android users will have to agree that the native client for Facebook is a bit dull, you can't create an event, you can't use Facebook chat and you can't even see your inbox. You will get notified though if there's a new message on your inbox, but if you tap the notification bubble, it will brings you to mobile Facebook via browser. But that ends today, Facebook for Android is finally got a new update, while the update does not include the Facebook chat or managing an Event, the update however, brings the Inbox feature that many users has been wanting.

The Inbox page has three tabs for your new received messages, a new subscription updates and also for the sent messages. You can even compose the message and send it to one or even more of your friends.

Other than the new Inbox feature, I haven't noticed anything different, probably a few bug fixes here and there. Facebook for Android is available for free on Android Market.
