Telkomsel's AppZone

While iPhone users can enjoy almost all paid apps in Indonesia's iPhone App Store, it is limited or almost none for Android and BlackBerry enthusiasts to experience such luxury.

Both Android Market and BlackBerry AppWorld is still closed if accessed from Indonesia for their paid apps. There are 3rd party though, like Mobihand and Handango.

Indosat was previously announcing its own App Store but I haven't heard any news from them ever since. Telkomsel, in other hand, seems already taken one step ahead by unveiling its AppZone. Go to http://appzone.telkomsel.com from phone or computer.

Advertised in national newspaper today, AppZone contains not only BlackBerry and Android apps, but also Java apps that can be installed in most phones.

I believe this is good trigger for Indonesian mobile developers to finally published their creations and make money from it.

Telkomsel AppZone is exclusively available for Telkomsel subscribers. Unfortunately, when tried to send the link/app to a number, no SMS confirmation received, blocking user to obtain app bought. Don't know what's wrong with system, but hope that it will get fixed as soon as possible.

Twitterrific 3.0 hits the App Store

Iconfactory has released Twitterrific 3.0 just in time for the iPhone 4 launch. The latest update to the oldest Twitter app for the iOS brings together the previously fragmented versions into just one app. Twitterrific for iPad, Twitterrific for iPhone, and Twitterrific Premium for iPhone have now been rolled into one ad-supported app curiously called Twitterrific for Twitter 3.0. While the app is free, there is an in-app fee of $4.99 if you wish to remove the ad and gain access to use multiple accounts.

Twitterrific 3 brings support for iPhone 4's retina display, Voice Over controls for the visually challenged, task switching, a brand new interface based on the iPad version, OAuth sign in, native and classic retweets, landscape mode, lists, a selection of image uploading services, a light theme which can be accessed separately from the Settings app, and more.

If you have Twitterrific for iPad and already paid for the full access, this version will recognize your purchase and you'll be able to use the app ad-free on your iPhone or iPod touch as well. You'll just have to go through the process as if you were going to pay for it again, but you won't be charged. Otherwise, you'll have to pay to remove the ads.

Confused yet? Basically, on the iPhone, Twitterrific 3 does not upgrade your installation of Twitterrific 2, it's a separate app. You can in fact have both apps installed on one iPhone. However, the older version will stop working once Twitter enacts its brand new sign on policy on August 16.

The new version has been completely redesigned to resemble the iPad version and is much more straight forward. There are some missing features from 2.0 but some will make their way back into the app.

Tumblr iPhone app updated to support iOS 4

Tumblr updated its iPhone app today. Version 1.2 carried plenty of changes and a redesign of its interface. No longer you're faced with three tabs, it's now just two, Post and Dashboard. Settings tab has been relegated to a tiny button on the top right of the screen.

It now supports native reblogging, click through URLs from photo and link posts, has German localization and has been made compatible for iOS 4 task switching.

Send to Twitter still unfortunately does not let you specify the content of the tweet which means tweets from Tumblr look like unfinished thoughts instead of links to blog posts.

iTunes Store app in South East Asia is alive!

Early on Saturday I saw a post over at iMerlion noting that the iTunes Store app in iPhones in Singapore suddenly became active. Tapping on the iTunes Store app would now bring you to the Singaporean store which showcases iTunes U as well as Podcasts. Previously it would take you to a page saying it's not yet available in your country and same goes for Indonesia.

Unfortunately I was too occupied yesterday to even think about trying it out on my iPhone. Upon returning home, I decided to pick up Quickoffice for the iPad which was recently released on the App Store. To my surprise, I saw the podcast tab resting nicely between App Store and iTunes U. iTunes U itself appeared not too long ago.

This is fantastic. Now Indonesians can not only subscribe to their favorite podcasts directly from the Indonesian iTunes Store but for current and future podcasters, they would be able to submit their podcasts to iTunes without having to jump through international iTunes hoops and have it available worldwide.

With Podcast and iTunes Store app now accessible in South East Asia (I've checked the rest of the SEA iTunes Stores), I think we can expect an increase in local podcasts in both video and audio formats. I know several Indonesian podcasters who would be thrilled to hear this news. I'm also expecting traditional media to catch on, albeit slowly, once they hear about this.

Currently there are already South East Asian podcasts in iTunes Store (including my own which has been on hiatus for a year) but all of them were submitted using a workaround which involves signing up to other countries' iTunes Store accounts.

If you have an iPhone or iPod touch with a South East Asian account, give the iTunes Store app a spin and search and download a few podcasts. You're going to enjoy it.

More details on iMovie for iPhone

The other day I posted a piece about iMovie for iPhone and left a question unanswered. Today, that question and a few other concerns have been resolved thanks to Jeff Carlson at TidBits whose contacts at Apple cleared up a few things.

According to Carlson,

  • iMovie will require iPhone 4 for technical reasons. It will not work on older iPhones
  • Un-exported projects on iMovie for iPhone cannot be shared with iMovie for Mac to be edited further
  • You can record videos directly from iMovie or import the ones from iPhone's Camera Roll.
The app wil ship on June 24 for $4.99

iMovie for iPhone

Along with iPhone 4, Apple introduced iMovie for iPhone at the Worldwide Developer Conference. Mac users are already familiar with what iMovie is and what it does but others may not be. With an iPhone that is capable of shooting 720p high definition video, it makes complete sense to have a fully functional video editing software that lets you produce a proper movie on the go.

iMovie for iPhone lets you combine newly recorded videos as well as existing clips on the Camera Roll with your own photos and music right on the timeline. It works just like iMovie on the Mac, which may lead one to think that iMovie for Mac was designed with a touch interface in mind.

Moving all those clips, markers, transitions, titles, themes, and effects with a mouse pointer doesn't seem to be all that natural after you've used it for a while. On the iPhone however, they seem to feel at home, at least according to the on stage demo and the reactions of those who have tried the app at the conference.

There's a good chance that should this app become popular, we'll see more iMovie productions created on the iPhone than on the Mac.

Gowalla for BlackBerry

Trying to catch its closest competitor in location based section, Foursquare, Gowalla finally unveiled its own app version for BlackBerry.

Previously, Gowalla has long decided to focus on their own iPhone and Android app, leaving BlackBerry users to use mobile web instead. Yet, this decision won't increase its customer base massively -- again, BlackBerry is still dominating USA's smartphone market share by 35%, latest report said, forcing Gowalla to create BlackBerry app.

I once tried Gowalla's mobile web, both in OS4.* and OS5.0. While it's better in OS5 browser, thanks to Gears add-on, Gowalla won't appeal that much due to its heaviness. FYI, Foursquare's mobile web is much simpler and won't require heavy usage of GPS, allowing non-smartphone users to participate.

Knowing their mistake, Gowalla stood up and eventually swallowed their words. Here comes the contender of location based app in BlackBerry realm.

The app itself is tagged beta, currently at version 0.8. This status allow them to make mistake(s) in their app, hoping to be fixed for the next edition.

One more thing, as Gowalla heavily depends on GPS coordinate, I believe this version won't support phone without built-in GPS module, leaving Gemini users in pain.

After installing and signing in, which was surprisingly fast, we will be greeted by pop up, saying there's updated version. I click the button and eventually it's still the same version with something I have installed. That's bug #1.

Passing the pop up, there will be 3 tab available, Activity, Spots, and Passport. Honestly their UI is somewhat better than Foursquare with fancy colors and nice icons. Ouw, and the loading is quite smooth, obviously very different experience compared to its mobile web version.

Activity records anywhere your friends checking in, including new friend request. Spots listed all venues to be checked in, while Passport will reveal your own history.

When choose not to sign out and continue your BlackBerry routines, Gowalla will pop friend's activity in any screen.

While I like Gowalla's UI better, I feel dissapointed that this BlackBerry app won't allow to add new venue. As their GPS rule is more strict than Foursquare, I found out their app won't easily adapt with GPS's new coordinate.

Moved out to a mall from my place, Gowalla failed to show venues from correct location, while Foursquare in the same handset did a better job. I tried to refresh my GPS location manually but didn't solve the problem.

What's good of this location based app if it won't show you the right venues in the right location? Being in beta version make it be forgiven but hopefully it will be fixed entirely in the next edition.

Anyway, for those who'd like to try, check this link out and tell us your impression: http://gowalla.s3.amazonaws.com/blackberry/Gowalla.jad

Seesmic for iPhone finally out on the App Store

The big eyed raccoon has finally made it to the iPhone. Seesmic today has released Seesmic for iPhone, its multi-service social networking client which hooks up to Facebook, Twitter and Ping.FM. The long awaited app is available for free from the App Store and weighs in at a meager 1.6 MB.

Seesmic for iPhone presents itself as a panel-based application which lets you assign multiple Twitter accounts, searches, lists, trending topics, Facebook account, and other services on individual panels. Similar to the iPhone's own home screen, Seesmic lets you add panel after panel and will add pages as it sees fit. The panels can be rearranged and removed by holding down on one panel just like managing iPhone apps. On each timeline, the panels are represented on the top left with an identifying icon for easy switching between the views.

This app features Evernote integration to save tweets, notes, and links to the online storage service. If you have Evernote installed, it will immediately send the selected tweet to that app. Unfortunately this means quitting Seesmic. There doesn't seem to be support for Instapaper, however.

If you have multiple accounts setup on Seesmic you can send your update simultaneously even across different services. Official and unofficial retweets are supported and there's an option to choose between using RT and via for the old retweet method from the app's settings which is located in the Settings app.

Review: Yellow Pages BlackBerry app

Once upon a time, when Internet hasn't available in every home. Yellow Pages was the most powerful tool about business directory that contains address and phone number information. Every year, I remembered that Yellow Pages book grew even thicker -- since business environment was in perfect condition -- until the Internet was invented. It is totally changing the way we perceive information.

I seldom find that thick yellow book in every home anymore. If we would like to find information about a place, we can seek to online business directory, or even better doing online search. Can Yellow Pages maker survive in this Internet era? Finally they change their business model, creating software and mobile apps that is more compact and usable. It's maintained by the child company of Telkom Indonesia anyway.

One product is made for Yellow Pages by Shakalogic. It's officially their app for BlackBerry platform. By the time I am writing this piece, the latest version is 1.0.7. I manage to try a little bit and would like to share my opinion about this app.

The UI itself is quite sleek. I admit I like the nice interface that beautify the homescreen. The upper menu is currently under development, so we only focus on business directory as their main purpose. This directory looks good on gathering information from many big cities in Indonesia in your hand. Sadly, this is the time when disaster comes.

Let me get it straight. The idea of business directory exist in first place is to give thorough information about one item in relatively small effort of time. Unfortunately, this goal can't be achieved using this app. Instead of helping us finding data, this app tested our temper. Here's why.

For example, we want to get information about "Rumah Makan Ny. Suharti" in Jakarta. Here's step by step direction to obtain the information:
  1. Click Jakarta
  2. Click "Rumah Makan"
  3. Click "Makanan Indonesia"
  4. Click Ny Suharti
That simple? No, because it requires tens of seconds on loading every step -- even with 3G connection! We are running out of time on getting one piece of information. How about if we need to obtain 10 or 20 information? I bet it is faster to open the browser and type the desired keywords in your favorite search engine. The search engine speediness will put this app into ashamed position.

So, how should this app be modified to be better? First, if the directories are static -- which I believe they are -- it should be included into the app, so the only information fetched from the Internet is the detailed information about the places. This strategy really work in other app like Domikado.

If the maker won't do that, for the sake of having small app to be downloaded, why don't they create search bar, just like what they have implemented in their own site? Put one or two option menu(s) to narrow the possibility, enter the keywords then voila! The information will arrive faster and more accurate.

If you hesitate to try this app anyway, open your BlackBerry browser and download it at http://yellowpages.shakalogic.mobi/.
