RIM buys DataViz, makers of Documents to Go

Popular mobile office software maker DataViz has apparently been acquired by Research In Motion according to Crackberry.com. Neither company has announced it but reportedly RIM paid $50 million cash for the deal.

The BlackBerry news site is saying that DataViz employees have been changing their profiles on LinkedIn from DataViz to RIM and that the deal is small enough for RIM to keep its details private.

Until now, despite its long held strong presence in the enterprise market, RIM has not had its own office solution. This gives them an easy solution and an additional leverage when pushing their Enterprise Server to potential clients given the inroads made by Apple and Google recently.

What this means for other platforms such as PalmOS, Windows Mobile, Maemo, iOS and Android is unclear but apparently they have announced that they will cease development of Documents to Go for webOS. It will not be a surprise if they do the same for other platforms as well but it's probably smarter to continue to do so.

RIM announces Curve 3G, BlackBerry 6 ready

Along with the Torch introduction, RIM extends its most popular line, Curve, into next level. A development from Curve 85xx series, Curve 3G -- or also known as 9300/Keppler -- adds 3G and GPS ability, and compatibility with BlackBerry 6 when available in coming months. Other than that, the spec is much less the same with 85xx. Quite surprising that RIM boldly stated this phone to be BlackBerry 6 ready while few phones that has better specs, Storm2 for example, isn't yet to be clear whether will be compatible with BlackBerry 6 or not.

Curve 3G will be available in North America first, with other region to follow by the end of the year. Pretty clear that RIM wants to hold its domination, especially in North America, in mid-to-low market when promoting BlackBerry 6 later this year.

RIM launching BlackBerry Locate Service for developers

RIM ready to launch service called Blackberry Locate Service for developers. Through this service, allowing developers to quickly access your location without having to fire up the device GPS. How to determine location using triangulation is actually not a new technology. Google Maps had previously been using triangulation methods to determine the location.

The new service can get your location in seconds using cellphone towers. This is similar to how the “My Location” service works in Google Maps. For application developers, Blackberry Locate Service allows developers to use their location data into their applications without relying on GPS. RIM hopes this Locate Service can stimulate the emergence of location-based applications such as encountered in Foursquare and Gowalla. If you want to using this feature, you have to using BlackBerry OS 5 on you device and equires a carrier that has enabled this feature.

BlackBerry Pearl 3G hits FCC

RIM has just handed over some variation of the BlackBerry Pearl 3G to the FCC for further certification. We know that RIM officially announced the BlackBerry Pearl 3G at WES 2010 with a promise of release in May.

The FCC has held up to their part by letting it pass and giving it a green light.  At this point it is anyone’s guess what the exact release dates will be. This BlackBerry Pearl series is quite interesting, besides having a SureType and Multitap input model of a typical BlackBerry Pearl series, BlackBerry Pearl 9105 model will have a keyboard with T9 input mode.

RIM teases us with a preview video of BlackBerry 6

Today, RIM's YouTube channel has released the first teaser video of the new BlackBerry 6 operating system. The two minutes video shows us a couple of features that most likely will be available in the new OS, including the much anticipated WebKit-based browser and also a multitouch gestures in the gallery app. While most of BlackBerry smartphone is a touch-less device, this video however, shows us the capability of BlackBerry 6 on (what I believe) a touch screen device and I admit it looks pretty good. So I think it'll be interesting to see the new OS on a touch-less device.
