Official Tumblr app makes its way to Android Market

If you're an Android user and use Tumblr frequently, rejoice! as the official Tumblr app is now available in Android Market. The app is pretty simple, you can post lots of stuffs such as Texts, Photos, Links, Audio and also Video. For Photo & Video you can choose the file from your gallery, or use the camera to take a new photo or video.

Sending a new post is very simple, just select what kind of content that you want to post then start writing. You can also add more details to your post such as, tags, URL, also set the time you want to publish your new post and you can even send your new post to your Twitter account. If you have a multiple Tumblr account, you can select which Tumblr account you want to send your new post.

Sadly, like many other cool apps for Android, Tumblr for Android is only available for Android 2.1 and above.

TweetDeck (beta) for Android is now available

Finally the wait is over, TweetDeck (beta) for Android is finally released to the public. The app is actually has been leaked since yesterday, but I decided not to write an article about it since its actually an old build & missing a couple of stuffs. But today, TweetDeck has announced on their blog, that the latest beta build is now available for download. Just hit the link they provide, login with your TweetDeck account (or create a new one) and then follow the instructions to download the app.

Facebook for Android gets a major update

If you ask me and probably most of Android users about Facebook App, one thing that came into our mind is that the app is inferior compared to the iPhone's or Blackberry's. The interface is ugly and most of its feature is basically a wrapper of its mobile webpage. But not anymore, last night Facebook just released a new update for Android and its awesome.

Android App Review: Twitter for Android

Following their official app for BlackBerry and also the upcoming Twitter for iPhone, Twitter finally launched their official app for Android platform.

Instead buying one of the already established apps on Android platform, they decided to create their own app from scratch and apparently Twitter has been working very close with the Android team from Google to make this app.

Facebook Android App gets Inbox support

Any Android users will have to agree that the native client for Facebook is a bit dull, you can't create an event, you can't use Facebook chat and you can't even see your inbox. You will get notified though if there's a new message on your inbox, but if you tap the notification bubble, it will brings you to mobile Facebook via browser. But that ends today, Facebook for Android is finally got a new update, while the update does not include the Facebook chat or managing an Event, the update however, brings the Inbox feature that many users has been wanting.

The Inbox page has three tabs for your new received messages, a new subscription updates and also for the sent messages. You can even compose the message and send it to one or even more of your friends.

Other than the new Inbox feature, I haven't noticed anything different, probably a few bug fixes here and there. Facebook for Android is available for free on Android Market.

Seesmic update its Android app, adds Native Retweet, Geotagging and a new Widget

When Loic realized that, Twitter will finally launch their official apps for Android someday in the future, he decided to push a new update of his own app, Seesmic, in order to make the competition for Twitter apps on Android platform more challenging. Today Seesmic just got a pretty big update that includes geotagging of your tweets, a choice on how to retweet (use the native retweet or use a quote retweet) and also a widget!

The widget is pretty simple, it displays the default account, the compose button and a glimpse of a tweet from your timeline. You can tap the tweet to read it entirely, tap the account name to view your full timeline. You can also scroll the timeline using the up and down button from the widget, its a nice idea, but I found the button to be pretty unresponsive though. The native retweet is finally here too, and Seesmic implements it very well, when you tap the retweet button, it will ask you to choose between using the native retweet or use the quote (.via) retweet. Geotagging allows you to attach your location onto your tweet, its pretty straight forward functionality, but I found it very long to attach the location. If there's a tweet with a location on it, you can tap the tweet and then view the location on Google Maps.

Overall I'm really pleased with this update, its good enough to make Seesmic become my favorite Twitter client for Android, again. Although, I kinda hoped that they also brings the autocomplete functionality on this update, but I guess it could wait. The next few weeks will be very interesting, as the official Twitter client for Android is on its way to compete with the likes of Seesmic, Twidroid, Touiteur and also Twicca.

The official Digg app for Android is released

Following the release of its iPhone apps, Yesterday Digg released the app for Android platform. The app it self is pretty simple and straight forward, there are three tabs representing Top, Recent and Upcoming stories on Digg. You can tap the arrow button on one of the item to preview the story or you can also tap the item to view it on Digg's internal browser. Just like the iPhone app, you can link the app to your Digg.com account, and after logging in, you can Dig or Bury both stories and comments from the apps.

The Digg Android app has been designed for an ideal mobile Digg browsing experience on an Android phone. The application allows you to participate on Digg through the digging and burying of stories and comments, while allowing you to flip back and forth between viewing story pages and comments.

There's a couple of features are missing though, the app doesn't have the Search functionality yet, and you can't share the stories straight from the app.

10 free apps that any new Android users should have

Android Market is still new, only got 20,000++ apps on it, and got to admit, there were also lots of junk apps in there and that makes you confused of what apps that you should download to your brand new Android phone. Don't worry we are here to help you pick up 10 apps that you should have on your Android phone.

Without further ado, here are 10 free Android apps that you should have
  1. Astro: 

    It's a file manager, and not just any file manager, it's probably the best & most powerful file manager for Android. You could do some basic features like, copy, paste, rename, move and delete some files or folder on your SDCard. Astro also allows you to backup your installed apps onto your phone SDCard and then restore them when you need it. Astro could also open a .zip files straight from the apps, so you don't need to extract the .zip file to see what's inside.
    Other similar apps: Linda File Manager.

  2. 3Banana:

    3Banana is a note taking application for Android. You could take a notes in form of text, voice, take a photo notes and even scan a barcode then store the info as a note. The great thing about 3Banana is that you could sync all your notes with your Google account, this way all of your notes will be stored in the cloud, so you don't need to worry about loosing any of your notes. 3Banana also has a widget, so if you're in a hurry, just add the widget to your homescreen, tap the textfield and then start creating a note.
    Other similar apps: AK Notepad, or Evernote (no offline reading).

  3. Astrid:

    If you're a Task junkie and need everything scheduled. You might wanna try Astrid. With Astrid, you could add a tag for your to do list, set a reminder and even sync it with your Remember The Milk account.
    Other similar apps: OI Shopping Lists, CloudList or Mobisle Note.

  4. Seesmic:

    Personally I'd prefer Twicca as my best Twitter client for Android, but since Seesmic supports 'Reply All' feature, Seesmic is the clear winner here. If we talk about Twitter client for Android, there's a lot of other alternatives out there such as, Tweetcaster, Swift, TweetsRide and of course Twidroid. But I personally think Twicca & Seesmic has a better features & especially a better UI than the others.
    Other similar apps: Twicca, Twidroid, TweetsRide, Swift, Tweetcaster, Touiteur, HootSuite and the list goes on..

  5. Newsrob:

    It's simply the best RSS feed reader app for your Android phone, why? first, you can sync it with your Google Reader account, and second, it's free! Sure there's other alternatives like Greed or FeedR, but both of them are paid apps.

  6. 3GWatchdog:

    With 3G Watchdog, you can monitors your mobile internet traffic usage. You can set the quota of your data usage, set a notification and also turn off the data (3G & GPRS) if the usage has or near its quota limit. You can also set a status icon on the notification drawer for a quick access to 3GWatchdog.

  7. APNDroid:

    It's a complementary apps for 3G Watchdog. Say that you don't want your Android phone to use any data when it's not necessary (duh), the only way to turn off your data completely on your Android phone is by deleting the APN name. But the process to do that is a pain in the a**, you need to do the tap dance to do that, tap the settings, tap the wireless & networks, tap the mobile network, then tap the Access Point Name, then delete it. With APNDroid you don't need to do the tap dance, just tap the APN Droid icon then it will turn off your data (3G & GPRS) completely. Tap the icon once again to turn it on. You could also add the APNDroid widget to your homescreen for an easy access.

  8. Abduction:

    So you want Doodle Jump game on your Android phone, but paid apps isn't available on your country, yet. Meet Abduction, it's a pretty similar game, your goal is to jump from one platform to another without falling by tilting your phone to the left or right. There's only a couple of level on the free version but I think it's a pretty good time waster.

  9. ACV or Droid Comic Viewer:

    ACV or Droid Comic Viewer is an apps that allows you to read a comic, straight from your Android phone. It supports a couple of file extensions such as, .CBZ/ZIP, .CBR/RAR, .ACV, .JPEG, .PNG, .BMP and also image folders. ACV also allows you to read a comic from your SDCard, so all you need to do is download a comic from your browser then open the file using ACV. It's a bit slow navigating from one page to another (it's definitely faster if you're on N1, Milestone or Xperia X10) but I think it's a pretty decent comic app for Android.

  10. Foyage:

    With Foyage, you could check out any nearby places from your phone. It includes places like ATM machine, Bank, Restaurants, Cinema, Hotels and even a Gas Station. You could also rate and give some review of that place.
    Other similar apps: Places Directory or buUuk.
There you have it, those are my ten must have apps on your Android phone, some might ask why I didn't put any IM application? My answer is pretty simple, if I want to chat I'd rather use the built in Google Talk apps, it's the most reliable IM apps for Android. I'm not saying the other IM apps isn't reliable, it's just not good enough for me. But if you want to have an IM apps, you could always try e-buddy or Meebo, both supports multiple account and has a very intuitive UI.

Other apps that I didn't mention but you should definitely try are, Google Sky Map - you could check out the stars and planets from your Android phone, Barcode Scanner - Allows you to scan a barcode then search the item via your browser, Dolphin Browser - alternative browser for your android, it supports multi touch and gestures.

Photoshop.com Mobile for Android gets a new update, open its editor for Android Developers

Adobe just announced that they have update the Photoshop.com Mobile to version 1.1 for Android device. The new update adds a new Contrast and Brightness editing tools, as well a couple of new fun Photo Effects, such as Vibrant, Pop, Vignette Blur, Warm Vintage, Rainbow, White Glow and Soft Black & White. 

Other than those new features, Adobe also announced that third-party developers now have access to Photoshop.com Mobile for Android 1.1 editor, this means that any 3rd party developers could integrate their apps with Photoshop.com mobile. Read here, if you want to learn how to integrate your apps with Photoshop.com Mobile 1.1.
